A foldable weight bench is the second piece of the compact home gym puzzle. After you’ve got adjustable dumbbells, a good bench unlocks presses, rows, step-ups, and core work that floor-based exercises just can’t replicate.

The challenge: most benches are built for garage gyms with permanent floor space. We tested benches that actually fold, store vertically, and sit solidly on apartment flooring.

The Shortlist

1. REP Fitness FB-5000 (Best Overall)

Not technically “foldable” in the collapsing sense, but the FB-5000’s legs fold flat against the pad for vertical storage against any wall. At $250, it’s the best bang for your buck.

  • 17” to 18.5” height range (with included shims)
  • Folds to 6” thick for closet storage
  • 1,000 lb weight capacity (overbuilt for home use)
  • Wheel on the front for easy transport

2. Flybird Adjustable Bench (Best Folding)

The Flybird is the most popular folding bench on Amazon for good reason. It folds completely flat to 12” deep and rolls on wheels.

  • 0–90° back adjustment (decline, flat, incline, shoulder)
  • 800 lb capacity
  • $180–$220 range
  • Comes with leg hold-down roller for decline work

3. Bowflex 3.1S (Premium Pick)

Premium pick for a reason — but limits your press ROM if you’re taller than 6’1”.

Key Safety Warning

Do not use folding benches at max listed capacity. The hinge mechanism is the weakest point. We bench 225 on the Flybird and felt noticeable flex. Great for moderate loads (dumbbell pressing up to 80 lbs total), but not for heavy barbell work.

Our Pick

For 90% of home gymbers: REP FB-5000 if you have wall space, Flybird if you need to fully stow the bench between workouts. Budget an extra $50 for a non-slip mat underneath — it saves your floor and deadens noise.
